To the EISD School-Board supporters who object to the sky banner at last week’s football game:
This may come as a surprise, but I’m in full agreement that sporting events should be apolitical. Sports should bring us together, not drive us apart. Watching Westlake wallop the ever-loving-football-snot out of Bowie is a heartwarming, community-building event. (Sorry, Bowie. 😘) You and I agree completely that football should be a politics-free zone.
But.
If your reaction to the airplane sky banner is anger because someone violated a politics-free zone, then you’ve figured out the crux of this whole school-board problem.
Those of us who oppose the School Board aren’t angry because we’re racists.
And we’re not angry because we don’t welcome diversity.
And we’re not angry because we’re bad people—or whatever else you tell yourself.
We’re angry because the School Board has violated a politics-free zone. The School Board is injecting politics—hard, progressive, woke politics—into every facet of the Eanes School District. Into the mission statement. The recommended resource list. Teacher training. Student groups.
Every facet.
They’ve said it all out loud: Equity. Critical Consciousness. Social justice. Whiteness as an ideology. Racist/Antiracist. Rejection of colorblindness.
This isn’t right. Robotics should be politics-free. All the student groups should be politics-free. Schools should be politics-free and politically neutral.
But the School Board has taken away the neutral space.
Neither teachers nor students should be subjected to the progressive, woke politics of a consultant who’s studied Critical Theory all of his academic life. The moment the School Board hired this political consultant—and that’s who Mark Gooden is, a guy pushing a progressive political worldview—and the moment they sent that consultant to push the progressive political worldview onto teachers, into classrooms, and into school clubs is the moment it became appropriate to fly the banner: Fire Leonard. Fire the Board.
I’ll say it again: Don’t start none, won’t be none. Don’t want to see a political sky banner at a football game? Then tell the School Board to get their illiberal woke politics out of Eanes schools.
